Travis School
Landmark at Abilene
Post Oak Preservation Solutions served as the preservation consultant for the rehabilitation of the historic Travis School campus in Abilene, Texas. The campus has two primary buildings: the Classroom Building, constructed in 1922 with a 1927 addition , both designed by noted Abilene architect David Castle, Sr., and the 1958 Cafetorium, designed by local firm Boone and Pope. Both buildings were adapted to provide affordable senior housing through the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program. Post Oak wrote a National Register of Historic Places Nomination for the campus and guided the project team through the historic tax credit process.
In the Classroom Building, historic corridors and windows were preserved while classrooms were sensitively reconfigured into apartments. The Cafetorium’s interior was adapted for residential use while maintaining its exterior character. Post Oak advised the project team on the restoration of masonry, the repair of historic windows, and the installation of compatible new doors, as well as the design of a new one-story building with apartments, offices, and amenity spaces. The result is a thoughtful balance of historic preservation and modern functionality, creating a vibrant community for Abilene seniors.
